Remembering the 70s and 80s

By Becky Hartson

You might remember the 70s for the three day week and the 80s for looking after No.1 but think of the great fashion that came from those two special decades. We have got flares and nice big sideburns from the 70s and then big shoulders, pedal pushers and ra ra skirts from the 80s. Now these are recreated on the high street and it is great news for 80's outfits because it is so easy to achieve a particular look.

Most styles and trends do not come from the catwalk but from the stars of the time and what you see on the TV. What girl did not want to look like Sandy, played by Olivia Newton John, from Grease in the tight leather trousers and skimpy top? And how about John Travolta as Danny with his dimpled chin and cool hair? This is what sexy fancy dress is all about - to look and feel great from the particular era you are trying to create.

The decade of the 60s had shown people that being more free and easy was the way to go so as the nation entered the 70s that feel good factor continued until a change with the Thatcher government when money became the prime concern.

In those heady days of the 70s fancy dress was a part of entertaining yourself but the costumes for sale or hire were fairly few and far between. However it was the era of the sexy French maid costume with spiky black heels and skirts so little that they did not leave much to the imagination. It was sexy fancy dress at its best and women loved it.

It was a time when women were really expressing themselves through their clothes as they had the freedom to do so more and more. From laid back prints and floaty skirts during the hippyishness of the 70s to the dandy shirts in the 80s with frills and huge cuffs, there was a wide range of options to choose from.

With disco really coming into fashion during the 70s fancy dress was on to a winner as any glittering costume with tight tops and flared trousers would show. It was also the time for hippies to come into their own so a great look was hair bands around your forehead, plaits in your hair, flowery printed wide legged trousers and sheer see through tops that showed off a hint of flesh. It is sexy fancy dress as you would want it.

As the 80s came in, disco changed into synthesiser pop so there was the emergence of a whole new set of people creating the music of the decade. It was the time of Adam and the Ants, with a popular 80s fancy dress being made to look like Adam Ant with his white stripe across his face and his Red Indian type of dress.

It was also the turn of the New Romantics where boy meets girl meets boy as it was often difficult to tell which was which. Men wore make up as much as the women. Influences came through the music again with bands like Japan, Ultravox and Spandau Ballet breaking the mould and creating a new vibe about the place. It was a time in the 80s fancy dress could almost have been the normal dress code as dressing up was the way to go whatever time of day or night it was.
